PICC Workshop Information

PICC Level One Workshop

Covering all aspects of Anatomy, Insertion, Care, Maintenance, Complications, and a Simulated Practical Demonstration.
The educational component covers the following topics:

  • Defining Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters, midclavicular and midline catheters
  • Indications – advantages, disadvantages, indications for placement amd contraindications
  • Anatomy and physiology update – inflammation, blood flow, characteristics of blood – osmolarity, pH, coagulation
  • Nursing care and maintenance of the PICC
  • Complication related to Intravenous Therapy – phlebitis, infection, post insertion – how to identify, minimise and prevent
  • Patient teaching – informed consent, before and after insertion, self monitoring
  • Intravenous therapy quiz
The practical component covers the following:
  • PICC insertion and demonstration (by a qualified PICC inserter) or insertion video
  • PICC dressing and statlock change
  • Blood sampling from a PICC line, incl flushing technique
  • IV Product review

PICC Level Two Self directed workbook

This Level two workbook is a self directed learning package designed to expand on knowledge gained at the level one workshop. Incorporating research and evidence based practice principals.

The participant must have attended an IVNNZ Inc.PICC level one workshop prior to commencement.
